9 Small Business Website Mistakes That Cost You Customers

A website does not have to be broken to be costing you customers. Small, easy-to-miss problems add up, and most of them can be fixed without a full redesign. Here are nine we see again and again.

1. No Clear Next Step

If a visitor finishes reading a page and does not know what to do next, most will do nothing. Every page should point to one clear action, such as call, text, request a quote, or book a time.

2. Contact Information That Is Hard to Find or Out of Date

A wrong phone number or an old address quietly costs real business. Put your contact details in the header or footer of every page, and check them whenever anything changes.

3. A Site That Does Not Work Well on a Phone

Most visitors are on a mobile device. If text is tiny, buttons are hard to tap, or the layout breaks, they leave. Check your site on your own phone today.

4. Slow Loading Pages

Large images, too many plugins, and weak hosting all slow a site down. Visitors do not wait around, and search engines pay attention to speed too.

5. No Security Certificate

Browsers warn visitors when a site is not secure. Seeing that warning before reading a single word sends people straight back to the search results. Your site should load with the padlock and https.

6. Outdated Software

WordPress, plugins, and themes need regular updates. Skipped updates are one of the most common causes of broken and hacked sites.

7. No Recent Backup

A bad update or a hack without a recent backup can mean starting over. Backups should be automatic, stored away from your website, and tested occasionally.

8. Content That Is Written for You, Not Your Customer

Talking about your company history before explaining how you help is a missed opportunity. Lead with the problem you solve and the result customers can expect.

9. Nobody Is in Charge

A website with no owner slowly goes stale. Someone needs to be responsible for updates, content, and security, whether that is you, a team member, or a partner you trust.

Start With One

You do not need to fix all nine this week. Pick the one that bothers you most and start there. If you would rather hand the list to someone else, that is exactly what we do.
