Your domain name is your address on the internet, and it is often the first thing a customer sees. Some businesses register several. Is that smart protection or an unnecessary expense? It depends on your situation.
When Extra Domains Make Sense
Common misspellings. If customers regularly misspell your business name, owning the common misspelling and forwarding it to your real site can catch them.
Other extensions. If your business is on a .com, you may want the .net or .org version so a competitor cannot register it and confuse your customers. Nonprofits and churches often want both the .org and the .com.
Campaign or product names. A short, memorable address for a specific campaign, event, or service can be easier to say out loud and print on materials than a long page address.
A new brand or location. If you are planning to expand, registering a name early keeps it available.
When It Is Probably Not Worth It
You do not need to buy every possible variation of your name. Dozens of extra domains add yearly costs and one more thing to keep track of. For most small businesses, one primary domain plus one or two protective ones is plenty.
The Most Important Rule: One Main Site
However many domains you own, pick one as your main address and forward the others to it. Search engines treat your main domain as the real site, and your marketing stays consistent. Splitting your content across several domains weakens all of them.
Keep Your Domains Safe
- Turn on auto-renew so a name never expires by accident.
- Make sure your own email, not a former employee or web designer, is the registered contact.
- Keep your registrar login in a safe place that more than one trusted person can reach.
