Is Your Website Actually Showing Up on Google? How to Check

Plenty of small business owners assume that once a website is live, it will naturally show up when someone searches for their business or service. That is not automatic. Here is how to check where you really stand.

Check 1: Search for Your Business Name

Search Google for your business name plus your city. Your website should appear near the top, with an accurate page title and description. If it does not appear at all, or the information shown is out of date, that needs attention.

Check 2: Search for What You Do

Now search the way a customer would, such as the service you offer plus your town. You may not rank first, but you should be able to tell whether you appear and who does. This shows you who you are really competing with.

Check 3: Use the Site Search Trick

Type site: followed by your web address into Google, with no space after the colon. The results show the pages Google has indexed from your site. If very few pages appear, or none, Google may not be seeing your site properly.

Check 4: Look at Google Search Console

Google Search Console is a free tool that shows how your site performs in search, which searches bring visitors, and whether Google found any problems. If you have never set it up, that is a good first step.

Check 5: Claim Your Google Business Profile

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing customers see, including the map, your hours, your phone number, and reviews. Make sure it is claimed, accurate, and matches your website.

What Usually Holds a Site Back

The most common causes are missing or generic page titles and descriptions, thin content that does not explain what you do, slow loading pages, a site that is hard to use on a phone, and pages that were never submitted to Google. All of these are fixable, and WordPress gives you good tools to fix them.

Being Online Is Not the Same as Being Found

If the checks above turned up problems, you are not alone, and it does not mean your site needs to be thrown out. Search visibility is built page by page, and steady improvements add up. We help businesses with exactly this, from fixing the basics to ongoing search engine optimization.
