What Happens the Day Your Domain Expires

Your renewal date came and went, and now your website won’t load and your email bounces. That’s what an expired domain looks like.

The details vary by company and by domain extension, so I won’t promise exact numbers of days. The usual pattern looks like this.

What usually happens

  1. Your site and email stop working or show a parked page.
  2. There’s a grace period where you can still renew at the normal price, or close to it.
  3. Then a redemption period. The domain can still be recovered, but it often costs a lot more.
  4. Finally, it’s released and anyone can register it, including a competitor.

Check yours today

  1. Sign in to your account and find the expiration date for each domain.
  2. Confirm auto-renew is on. It’s a setting you can turn off, so check, don’t assume.
  3. Update the card if it’s expired or replaced.
  4. Make sure the contact email is one you read every week.
  5. Add the expiration date to your calendar with a reminder 30 days earlier.

Already expired?

Renew right away. Don’t wait to see if it fixes itself, and don’t register a lookalike in a panic. Every day counts.
